Board Director (multiple)
Position Description
New board members are sought for a not-for-profit in the feminist activist/education sector that promotes action on ending gendered violence and advancing gender equality.Â
Background. The organisation is in its first few years operation, founded by grass roots organisers of a feminist protest event. The organisation is committed to women’s rights, including transgender rights and seeks to centre Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women as the primary or first lens through which to analyse feminist issues in Australia and determine its agenda for action. This acknowledges the sovereignty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and that their land was never ceded.Â
The organisation seeks to be trauma informed in its approaches, supporting survivor participation and leadership with national reach through locally organised, but national coordinated actions.Â
The organisation is registered as a company limited by guarantee, registered with the ACNC as a charity and operates a tax exempt donation facility through partnership with the National Foundation for Australian Women. The organisation has a strong recognition factor from its initial national and local actions, and now seeks to consolidate this.Â
Directors are sought to take the organisation to the next stage of its development. A mix of directors, representing the diversity of the interests the organisation advocates for, are sought to join some of the existing directions. Previous experience as a director is not an essential pre-requisite as the organisation supports people who are beginning their board career, as well as those already established. An existing advisory council is providing mentoring support on governance and also advises on strategic directions.Â
The people we seek. Individuals with skills in advocacy, policy development, financial management, strategy and media (including public speaking/media and advocacy), volunteer engagement and leadership, fundraising as well as a commitment to the ideals above will be best suited to the organisation. We want to build a team, of board directors, advisors and volunteers who can grow and advance the organisation.Â
Commitment. Board meetings are envisaged monthly in the first six months and thereafter quarterly, with participation in organising and advocacy activities as individual Director’s commitment and availability allows. At present this is a volunteer role.Â
